R Williams stands between the posts to command the penalty area. The defensive unit functions with a back three consisting of B Aubaas, K Ndamane, and K Cupido. B Aubaas acts as the central anchor to mark the target man, while K Ndamane and K Cupido provide cover on either side to intercept passes. The wide defenders, K Mudau and D Lunga, operate as wing backs who must track back to form a five man line when defending deep, but they also push up the pitch to provide width.

The midfield operates with a three man central unit. T Mokoena sits in front of the defense as a single pivot to shield the back three and break up play. Next to him, M Allende and J Adams act as the engine, with M Allende often looking to pass and connect the lines while J Adams provides energy in the middle. This trio works to occupy the central zones and prevent opponents from playing through the heart of the pitch.

Sundowns uses two forwards to lead the attack. I Rayners and B Leon play as a strike pair that works to hold up the ball and stretch the opposition defense. Rather than staying wide, the two attackers focus on central movements to create space for the wing backs to overlap. When the team wins the ball, the forwards press the opposition defenders to force mistakes and trigger immediate transitions.
