Roma employs a 5-2-3 formation that leans heavily on a high press and quick vertical transitions. This lineup is built to control the middle of the pitch while using wide areas to stretch the opposition. By utilizing a back five, Roma can maintain a solid base when they do not have the ball and quickly push players forward to exploit spaces behind the opponent.

Svilar starts between the posts to manage the defensive line. The defense consists of three central players with Mancini, Lukeba, and Kanté forming a compact unit. Mancini provides aerial strength and leadership, while Lukeba and Kanté focus on covering space and intercepting passes. On the flanks, White acts as a right wing back to provide width, and N'Dicka plays as a left wing back to overlap and send crosses into the box. This five man unit can shift quickly to block passing lanes or drop deep to protect the area.

The midfield works as a double pivot with Pellegrini and Fabián Ruiz occupying the central spaces. Fabián Ruiz uses his passing range to connect the defense to the attack, while Pellegrini works to drive forward and break the line with his runs. These two players must cover significant ground to shield the back three and prevent opponents from playing through the center. They act as the engine room, attempting to win the ball back immediately after a loss to keep the pressure high.

In the attacking third, the team uses three forwards. Dovbyk acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and occupy the two central defenders. On the wings, Kulusevski operates as an inverted winger on the right, often looking to cut inside and create chances. Nkunku plays on the left, using his movement to find pockets of space between the lines. This front three is designed to press the opposition high up the pitch, forcing mistakes and creating quick attacking opportunities.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the runs of White and N'Dicka. When the wing backs push high, they force the opposing defenders to move out of position, leaving gaps for Kulusevski and Nkunku to exploit. Additionally, the three central defenders provide great compactness when defending a lead, making it hard for opponents to find space in the box. The combination of a strong central block and wide threats makes this a difficult lineup to break down.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on intense running and quick transitions to overwhelm the opponent. It is most effective against teams that play with a high defensive line and leave space behind their defenders.
