This lineup is built to play a very vertical and attacking brand of football. The goal is to overwhelm the opposition by committing many bodies forward to force errors in the final third. Inter wants to play with high intensity and use quick transitions to catch the defense before they can get back.
At the back, ATUBOLU starts between the posts to organize the unit. The defense operates as a flat back four with BASTONI and LACROIX acting as the central defenders. BASTONI is known for his passing range and ability to step up into midfield, while LACROIX provides the physical presence to cover space. BISSECK plays as the right back to provide defensive stability, while DIMARCO functions as an attacking left back who likes to push high up the pitch to provide width. The back line must stay compact to prevent long balls while the full backs decide when to overlap.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with BARELLA and ANDRÉ. ANDRÉ, who is the captain, acts as the primary shield for the defense, using his tackling and ability to intercept passes to break up play. BARELLA plays a more box to box role, driving forward to connect the defense to the attack. This pair must work hard to cover the ground left behind when the forwards press. They are responsible for winning the ball back and immediately looking to switch play to the wide areas.
The attack is incredibly heavy with four players positioned high up the pitch. LAUTARO and ZIELINSKI act as the central duo, where LAUTARO uses his pressing intensity and clinical movement to lead the line. DIABY occupies the right wing to provide dribbling and directness, while NDOYE stays wide on the left. This front four is designed to pin the opposition back and create space through constant movement. The forwards must press in unison to prevent the opponent from building from the back.
One major tactical advantage of this 4-2-4 formation is the ability to create wide overloads when DIMARCO and NDOYE push forward. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the attacking zone, which can isolate defenders in one on one situations. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, moving the ball from the double pivot to the four attackers in very few passes to catch the opponent out of position.
This formation is a high risk, high reward system focused on heavy offensive pressure. It is best suited for matches where Inter needs to break down a low block or when facing an opponent that struggles with high pressing.
