Starting Lineup

Jihlava operates in a 4-5-1 formation that focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions. This lineup is built to sit deep and deny space between the lines, forcing opponents into wide areas before looking to break forward. Soukup acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four with Matoušek providing width at left back and Haala operating at right back. In the center, Štětka and Beneš hold the line and focus on marking the opposing strikers. These defenders work together to step up during a press or drop deep to protect the area around Soukup when the team sits in a low block.

The midfield is the engine of the Jihlava system, utilizing a crowded five man group. Pešek and Čermák function as a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Ahead of them, Ogiomade, Křehlík, and Lacko occupy the central and half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. This group works to press the ball in waves and uses short passes to move the ball from the defensive third into the attacking third.

Up front, the team relies on a lone striker, Křivánek, who must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to push forward. Křivánek leads the press from the front, trying to force turnovers high up the pitch. The attacking movements depend on the midfielders making late runs into the box while Křivánek pulls defenders out of position to create space for others to run into.

One major advantage of this formation is the massive density in the center of the pitch which makes it hard for teams to find passing lanes. The double pivot of Pešek and Čermák provides a layer of protection that allows the wide players to stay more compact. Jihlava also benefits from the ability to quickly switch play to the flanks once they win the ball back in the middle.
