AFC Wimbledon Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Bradley · Yehia · Philip · Mathis · Kew · Zachary · Justin · Zitong · Sam · Padra · TakumiAFC Wimbledon utilizes a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid while relying on quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. The goal is to remain compact in the middle and use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the play during attacking phases.
Bradley starts in goal to organize the back line. The defense features a back three consisting of Justin, Philip, and Kew. Justin acts as the central anchor while Philip and Kew cover the spaces to the left and right. The wing backs, Mathis and Yehia, provide the necessary width. Mathis pushes high up the right flank to offer an outlet, while Yehia does the same on the left. This defensive unit works to stay narrow to prevent passes through the center.
The midfield functions as a three man block. Zachary and Zitong work in the central areas to shield the defense and intercept passes. They provide the link between the back three and the attackers. Sam operates as an attacking ten, sitting just behind the strikers to create chances and break the line with vertical passes. This midfield group must track back quickly when the team loses possession to ensure they do not get overrun.
In the attacking phase, AFC Wimbledon relies on two forwards, Padra and Takumi. They play as a pair to occupy the opposing central defenders. Padra and Takumi are tasked to press the opposition back line to force mistakes. The attack is built through the wide runs of Mathis and Yehia, who provide crosses for the strikers. The movement of Sam moving into pockets of space helps the two forwards hold up the ball and wait for support.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The presence of three central defenders creates numerical superiority against teams playing with two strikers. Using Mathis and Yehia allows for wide overloads that force the opposition to shift across the pitch. The compactness of the midfield three makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center, often forcing them to play wide where the wing backs can engage.
This 5-3-2 formation is designed for teams that want to sit deep and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against dominant teams that hold a lot of possession.
