Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubizarreta · Núñez © · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · De la Fuente · Gallego · Urtubi · De Andrés · Argote · Noriega · SarabiaAthletic plays with a 5-4-1 formation that focuses on being defensively solid. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before looking for quick transitions to catch opponents out. The primary goal for Athletic is to remain compact in the middle and deny space behind the back line.
Sarabia acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of three central defenders with De Andrés, Gallego, and Urtubi providing a heavy presence in the middle to block crosses and win aerial duels. Argote and Noriega operate as wing backs, tasked with pushing up to provide width or dropping back to form a flat five when the team sits deep. This unit functions by staying close together to prevent through balls from breaking the lines.
The midfield acts as a flat four that sits right in front of the defensive block. Núñez (C) captains the side and works to shield the defense while Goikoetxea stays central to break the line with passes or tackle in the middle. Urkiaga and De la Fuente provide width on the flanks, helping to track back when the team loses possession and pressing the opposition wide players to force them into crowded areas. This midfield unit connects the defense to the lone striker by winning second balls and quickly switching play.
In the attacking third, Zubizarreta works as a lone striker. Because there is only one forward, he must hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield. The attack is built through long passes or quick vertical runs from the wide players. Urkiaga and De la Fuente often cut inside to support the central area, creating movements that allow Zubizarreta to find space in the box.
One main advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The team can also use the speed of transition to exploit the space left behind by attacking teams. By using Argote and Noriega to overlap, the team creates width even when playing with a single striker.
This formation is a reliable way for Athletic to stay hard to beat and frustrate much stronger sides. It is best suited for matches where the opponent dominates possession and the team must rely on a disciplined low block.
