Athletic plays a 4-5-1 formation that focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions. This lineup is built to sit deep when under pressure and use the speed of the players to strike on the break. The team looks to crowd the central areas to force the opponent wide before winning the ball and pushing forward vertically.
UnaiSimón guards the goal and organizes the back line. The defense operates as a flat back four with Yeray and Laporte acting as the central pairing. Yeray provides aerial strength and Laporte acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back. Yuri and Gorosabel provide width, with Yuri often looking to overlap to support the midfield while Gorosabel tucks in to help cover the central zone. The unit works to stay close together to minimize space between the lines.
The midfield is composed of five players working in a dense block. Jauregizar and RuizdeGalarreta form a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. In front of them, Williams, Berenguer, and NicoWilliams occupy the central and half spaces. NicoWilliams uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward, while Williams and Berenguer work to connect the midfield to the striker. This group shifts left and right as a single unit to block passing lanes.
Athletic uses a lone striker in Guruzeta to lead the line. Guruzeta works to hold up the ball and bring the advancing midfielders into play. The attack relies on the width provided by NicoWilliams and the movement of Berenguer to create space. When the team wins the ball, the forwards press high to force mistakes, while the wide players look to cut inside and threaten the goal directly.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to maintain compactness when defending. By crowding the midfield, the team can create numerical superiority in the central zone to win second balls. The speed of transition is a major asset, as NicoWilliams and Williams can exploit large spaces behind the opposition defense immediately after an interception.
This 4-5-1 formation creates a resilient unit that is difficult to break down through the middle. It is best suited for games against possession heavy teams where Athletic can soak up pressure and hit them on the counter.
