Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MIKE (MAIGNAN) · KONI (DE WINTER) · FIKAYO (TOMORI) · STRAHINJA (PAVLOVIC) · ALEXIS (SAELEMAEKERS) · PERVIS (ESTUPIÑÁN) · YOUSSOUF (FOFANA) · ADRIEN (RABIOT) · LUKA (MODRIC) · CHRISTIAN (PULISIC) · RAFAEL (LEÃO)Milan utilizes a 3-5-2 formation to play a vertical style of football. This lineup focuses on controlling the center of the pitch and using quick transitions to catch opponents out of position. The goal is to maintain a compact block that allows for rapid forward runs once possession is won.
MIKE stays between the posts to command the penalty area. In front of him, the back three consists of STRAHINJA on the left, FIKAYO in the middle, and KONI on the right. FIKAYO acts as the central anchor to cover space, while STRAHINJA and KONI provide width and strength in the air. These defenders must step up together to catch attackers offside or drop deep to protect the space behind.
The midfield works through a central trio and two wide players. ADRIEN and YOUSSOUF occupy the central roles to shield the defense and break the lines with their passing. LUKA sits ahead of them as an attacking ten to connect the midfield to the forwards. On the flanks, PERVIS and ALEXIS act as wing backs to cover the entire width of the pitch, pushing up to support the attack and tracking back to defend the wide areas.
Milan employs two forwards in the attacking phase. RAFAEL and CHRISTIAN work as a strike partnership to occupy the two central defenders of the opposition. They use their movements to pull defenders out of position, creating gaps for LUKA to run into. The wing backs, PERVIS and ALEXIS, provide the width needed to stretch the opposition, allowing for crosses into the box or late runs into the penalty area.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central midfield area. With ADRIEN, YOUSSOUF, and LUKA, the team can often outnumber opponents in the middle of the park. Another strength is the capacity to use wide overloads when PERVIS or ALEXIS overlap their respective midfielders, forcing the opposition wingers to track back and defend deep.
This 3-5-2 formation provides a balance of defensive compactness and central control. It is best suited for games against teams that play with narrow formations where the wing backs can exploit the space on the flanks.
