RB Leipzig Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MAARTEN (VANDEVOORDT) · RIDLE (BAKU) · CASTELLO (LUKEBA) · WILLI (ORBÁN) · DAVID (RAUM) · NICOLAS (SEIWALD) · XAVER (SCHLAGER) · CHRISTOPH (BAUMGARTNER) · YAN (DIOMANDE) · ANTONIO (NUSA) · RÔMULORB Leipzig utilizes a 4-3-3 formation that focuses on a high press and verticality. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move it quickly into the final third. The goal is to force mistakes from the opponent and use rapid transitions to catch defenses out of position.
MAARTEN operates between the posts to start the build up. The defensive unit sits with a high line to compress the space in the middle of the pitch. WILLI and CASTELLO act as the central defenders, with WILLI providing cover while CASTELLO remains dominant in the air. On the flanks, DAVID and RIDLE provide width, often pushing high to overlap the attackers and create extra passing lanes. The back four works to step up together to maintain a tight block when the ball is played long.
The midfield consists of a three man unit that connects the defense to the front line. XAVER and NICOLAS sit in the deeper positions to shield the defense and intercept passes. They are joined by CHRISTOPH, who plays as an attacking ten to drive forward and break the line with through balls. This midfield group works to press in waves, ensuring the opponent cannot easily pass through the center. XAVER and NICOLAS also help to switch play to the wide areas when the middle is blocked.
In the attacking third, RB Leipzig uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. ANTONIO and YAN act as wide wingers, with ANTONIO often looking to cut inside to create space for DAVID. RÔMULO operates as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link play with the advancing midfielders. The wingers are tasked with high pressing to prevent the opposition from building from the back. This front line movement creates constant pressure on the opposing full backs.
This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball near the opponent goal. The presence of DAVID and RIDLE allows for wide overloads when they overlap the wingers. By using XAVER and NICOLAS to control the central zone, the team can also ensure compactness when defending a counter attack. This allows the team to shift quickly from an attacking posture to a defensive block.
The 4-3-3 formation relies on aggressive pressing and quick vertical passes to unsettle the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
