Boca plays with a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid while remaining extremely vertical in transition. The main idea is to sit deep in a compact block and use the speed of the forwards to punish opponents on the break.

G. Buffon stays in goal to organize the defense and command his area. The defensive unit relies on a back five that can shift as a single unit. F. Baresi (C) leads from the center, using his elite reading of the game to intercept passes and step up to stop attacks. F. Rijkaard provides presence in the middle of the three center backs to win headers and cover space. A. Nesta sits on the right of the central trio to mark dangerous runners. On the wings, the wing backs provide the necessary width. P. Maldini uses his famous tackling and positioning to defend the left flank, while E. Gerets pushes forward to overlap and provide crosses from the right.

Central midfield consists of a three man group that connects the defense to the attack. D. Maradona plays as the attacking ten, using his legendary dribbling to break the line and create chances. L. Matthäus operates in the right central role to press the ball and drive the team forward. B. Robson occupies the left central spot to shield the back line and track back when the team loses possession. This group works to win the ball and immediately switch play to the wide areas or find the strikers.

Two forwards lead the attack for Boca. Ronaldo plays as the left striker, using his explosive pace and strength to run in behind the defense. M. van Basten acts as the right striker to hold up the ball and link play with the midfield. Since the wing backs provide the width, these two forwards can stay central to occupy the opposition center backs. They press high to force errors and win the ball close to the goal.

One major advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push up to join the attack. The team can also achieve great compactness when defending in a low block. The combination of a three man central defense and a strong midfield allows them to control the central zones and prevent through balls.

This 5-3-2 formation is built for teams that want to be hard to beat and strike fast. It is best suited for matches against heavy possession teams that leave gaps behind their high defensive line.
