JOSEP stays between the posts to anchor the back line. The three central defenders consist of BISSECK, LACROIX, and BASTONI. The wing backs, PORRO and DIMARCO, provide the necessary width by pushing high up the pitch to act as wide midfielders. This allows the three defenders to shift and cover the space left behind when the wing backs overlap.

The midfield operates with a central pair consisting of BARELLA and CALHANOGLU. CALHANOGLU sits deeper to shield the defense and acts as the primary playmaker with his long range passing. BARELLA uses his high pressing intensity to drive the team forward and connect the defense to the attack. PORRO and DIMARCO provide the engine on the flanks, helping the midfield hold the center while ensuring the team does not get overrun in wide areas.
