Starting Lineup

SK Rapid (Austria) uses a 5-4-1 formation to play a defensively solid style. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents on the break. The team focuses on remaining compact in the middle of the pitch to force the opposition wide.

Antiste plays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense consists of a back three with Gulliksen, Amane, and Seidl working together to cover the central zones. Gulliksen acts as a central anchor while Amane and Seidl handle the space to his left and right. The wing backs, Wurmbrand and Dahl, provide the necessary width. Wurmbrand is tasked to push up the left flank and Dahl to run up the right. When the team loses the ball, these two must track back quickly to form a flat five.

The midfield works as a flat four to clog the passing lanes. Bolla and J. Auer act as a double pivot to shield the center of the pitch. Bolla sits deeper to intercept passes while J. Auer looks to break the line with forward runs. Ahead of them, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao operate in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack. These two players must work hard to track back and support the defensive unit when the opponent has possession.

The attack relies on a lone striker, Hedl, to hold up the ball. Hedl stays central to pin the opposition defenders back and creates space for the midfielders to push up. The attacking build up relies on long balls or quick switches to the wide areas where Wurmbrand and Dahl can cross the ball. The wingers, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao, press high to prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

One tactical strength of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. The narrow distance between Bolla, J. Auer, Cvetkovic, and Raux Yao makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads during transitions. When Dahl or Wurmbrand overlap, they force the opposition wide and create crossing opportunities for Hedl.
