Newell's plays with a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid while maintaining a vertical edge in transition. The team looks to sit deep when out of possession and then push forward quickly once the ball is won. It is a formation designed to absorb pressure and use the clinical nature of the forwards to strike.

R. Dasayev guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back line features a central trio consisting of F. Rijkaard, D. Passarella (C), and E. Figueroa. Rijkaard provides strength in the middle and reads the game well to intercept passes. The captain, D. Passarella (C), uses his aerial strength and aggression to lead the back line. A. Brehme and E. Gerets act as wing backs. They must cover the entire flank, overlapping to provide width in attack and tracking back to form a five man block when the team defends.

The midfield works through a central core and an attacking ten. M. Platini sits in the hole to create chances, using his incredible passing range to break the line. A. Giresse and J. Tigana provide the engine room. Tigana uses his pressing intensity to win the ball back in the middle, while Giresse works to connect the defense to the attackers. They must shift as a unit to cover the gaps left by the wing backs and protect the center.

In the attacking third, the team uses two forwards to cause trouble. Romário stays close to the goal, using his clinical finishing and movement to find space. R. Baggio acts as a second striker who can drop into pockets of space to carry the ball forward with his dribbling skill. The attack relies on the width provided by A. Brehme and E. Gerets to stretch the opposition. When the wing backs cross the ball, it creates opportunities for the strikers to attack the box.

A key strength of the Newell's lineup is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. Having three central defenders and three midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. Another advantage is the speed of transition. Once J. Tigana or M. Platini win the ball, they can immediately find R. Baggio or Romário to catch the defense off guard. This creates many one on one situations for the forwards.

This 5-3-2 formation creates a very tough defensive block that is hard to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession but struggle to deal with quick, direct attacks.
