Raya acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up from the back. The defensive unit uses a back three with Zubimendi sitting as the central defender to hold the line. Gabriel plays as the left central defender to use his aerial strength, while Saliba operates as the right central defender to cover space and intercept passes. Calafiori plays as the left wing back to push forward and provide width, while Timber acts as the right wing back to overlap and cross. This formation allows the defenders to sit deep or step up to squeeze the play.

The midfield works as a double pivot to connect the defense and the attack. Rice plays as the left central midfielder to shield the defense and use his ball winning ability, while Ødegaard plays as the right central midfielder to create chances and break the line with his passing range. These two must work hard to track back and cover the spaces left by the wing backs. They provide the link that allows the ball to move from the back three into the attacking players.

The attack features three players positioned high to press the opposition. Alvarez plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press, while Gordon operates as the left winger to cut inside and Saka plays as the right winger to exploit space on the flank.
