This lineup aims to control the tempo through quick transitions and aggressive ball winning. The team uses this system to squeeze opponents in their own half and create immediate scoring chances when they win the ball back.
Raya acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up from the back. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Gabriel, Saliba, and Zubimendi. Gabriel provides aerial strength and physical presence, while Saliba acts as a ball playing defender with high recovery speed. Zubimendi sits in the center to cover space and intercept passes. The wing backs, Calafiori and Timber, push high to provide width and support the attack. Calafiori can tuck inside to help the midfield, while Timber provides constant energy to overlap on the right side.
The midfield relies on a double pivot of Rice and Ødegaard. Rice works to shield the defense and break the lines with his driving runs and ball winning. Ødegaard operates as the main creator, using his passing range to find attackers in pockets of space. This pair connects the defense to the front line, ensuring the team can switch play quickly to find the wide players.
Arsenal use three attackers to stretch the opposition. Alvarez leads the line as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the defenders. Saka stays wide on the right to cut inside and create, while Gordon operates on the left wing to drive at defenders. The movement of these three forwards is designed to pull the opposition back four apart, creating gaps in the middle for the midfielders to exploit.
This formation offers clear tactical advantages, particularly the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using five defenders and two central midfielders, the team stays compact when defending in a mid block. The overlapping runs from Calafiori and Timber create wide overloads that force the opposition to defend deep. This allows Saka and Gordon to find space in one on one situations against the full backs.
The 5-2-3 formation creates a heavy presence in both the middle and wide areas of the pitch. It is best suited for games where the team wants to dominate possession and pin the opponent into their own penalty area.
