River utilizes a 5-3-2 formation that prioritizes defensive solidity and quick verticality. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents on the break. The goal is to limit central space and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition during transitions.
Beltran guards the goal and directs the defense. The back line consists of a central trio with Moreno acting as the anchor, while Rivero and Martinez Quarta provide cover on the left and right. Martinez Quarta uses his passing range and aerial strength to help move the ball out of the back. Acuña and Montiel operate as wing backs, tasked to push high and overlap the midfield. This defensive unit shifts as a single block to stay compact.
The midfield operates with three players to control the center of the pitch. Paez and Galvan work as a pair to shield the defense and intercept opposition passes. Meza plays as an attacking ten, looking to connect the lines by finding space between the opponent's midfield and defense. While Paez and Galvan help the team retain possession, Meza looks to break the line with forward runs and clever passes.
In the attacking phase, the team uses two forwards, Colidio and Driussi. They work as a strike pair to hold up the ball and allow the rest of the team to move up the pitch. Colidio and Driussi often drop deep to pull defenders out of position, which creates room for the wide players. The attack is built through the wide areas where Acuña and Montiel can deliver crosses into the box.
A key tactical strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. When Montiel and Acuña push forward, they create situations to isolate wide players in one on one battles. Additionally, the five man defense provides great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for teams to find gaps in the middle. The speed of transition from a low block can also catch teams off guard.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a strong defensive foundation for River. It is most effective when playing against ball dominant opponents that require a disciplined low block and quick counters.
