DONNARUMMA acts as the last line of defense, relying on his massive frame and shot stopping to protect the goal. The defensive line consists of only two central defenders, BASTONI and SCALVINI, who must play a high line to squeeze the space. BASTONI brings ball playing ability and long range passing to start attacks from deep, while SCALVINI provides coverage and aerial strength. Because there are only two players in the back, they must step up to intercept passes and track runners effectively.

The midfield is a heavy block consisting of five players to control the center. CALAFIORI and PALESTRA work as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and break up play. LOCATELLI sits just ahead of them to connect the lines, using his positioning to intercept play and move the ball forward. On the flanks of this midfield block, TONALI and BARELLA operate as wide midfielders who can drive forward or drop back to cover the space behind the wingers.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three forwards to stretch the defense. KEAN leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and make runs into the channels. ZANIOLO and CANCELLIERI operate as wide attackers, with ZANIOLO often looking to cut inside from the left to create shooting lanes. This formation uses the width of the midfield to create space for the forwards to run into, ensuring constant pressure on the opponent.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to keep possession.
