Germany National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Raum · Kimmich · Anton · Rüdiger · Havertz · Wirtz · Pavlovic · Goretzka · Karl · Neuer · T. MüllerGermany employs a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and heavy vertical football. The intention is to control the middle of the pitch and force mistakes high up the field through aggressive positioning.
Neuer stays between the posts to act as a sweeper keeper with a massive passing range to start attacks. Ahead of him, Anton and Rüdiger form a two man back line that operates with a very high line. Rüdiger uses his aerial strength and recovery speed to cover space behind the defense while Anton stays close to help intercept long balls. This defensive unit relies on stepping up early to snuff out danger before it reaches the box.
The midfield acts as the engine room of Germany using a five man block. Kimmich sits in a deep role to shield the defense and switch play with his passing. Beside him, Raum and Pavlovic work to control the central zones and protect the space left by the high defenders. Goretzka drives forward to provide power in the middle, while T. Müller operates as an attacking ten to find pockets of space between the opponent lines.
The attack uses three forwards to stretch the opposition. Havertz plays as a lone striker who likes to drop deep to link play and hold up the ball. Wirtz cuts inside from the left to create chances, while Karl stays wide on the right to provide width. This front three works to press the opposition defenders immediately upon losing possession to force quick turnovers.
This formation offers huge numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By packing the center with five midfielders, the team can dominate possession and break lines easily. The high positioning of the players also creates an ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build from the back.
This lineup is designed for aggressive, high tempo football that seeks to suffocate the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and overwhelm a lower block through central density.
