Southampton use a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a direct and high pressing style of football. The intent is to win the ball high up the pitch and switch play quickly to catch the opposition before they can settle. It is a system designed for verticality and quick transitions.
Peretz stands between the posts as the goalkeeper. The back line consists of a flat back four. Bree plays at right back and is expected to overlap to provide width. Welington operates at left back to cover the flank. Harwood and Wood occupy the central defensive roles. These two must stay compact to cover each other and win headers. The defensive unit works to stay together and shift to block passing lanes.
The midfield consists of a bank of four that links the defense to the attack. Jander and Bragg play in the center of the pitch. Bragg acts to shield the back four and intercept passes in the middle. Jander works to drive forward and break the line with his runs. On the wings, Scienza plays on the right and Fellows plays on the left. These wide players must track back to assist the full backs and then push up to provide support when the team moves into the final third.
The attack features two strikers to lead the press. Stewart plays as the left striker alongside Azaz. The left striker is tasked to hold up the ball to bring others into play. Azaz looks to make runs into the space behind the defense to catch opponents out. Play is built through the wide areas, where Scienza and Fellows can cut inside or cross the ball into the box. These movements create constant pressure on the opposing central defenders.
One tactical strength for Southampton is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. When the two strikers press, the midfield line of four can step up to squeeze the space and tackle opponents. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads. When Bree and Welington push forward, they join the wingers to overwhelm the opposition flanks. The formation also allows for compactness when the team has to sit deep and defend in a low block.
This 4-4-2 formation relies on physical presence and quick turns of play. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle with intense pressing or leave space behind their defensive line.
