Starting Lineup

Al-Ahli (KSA) utilizes a 5-4-1 formation that focuses on being defensively solid. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before looking to hit teams on the break. The goal is to remain compact in the middle and use the width of the pitch only when the transition begins.

Toney stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense operates as a back three with Mahrez, Kessié, and Millot sitting in a line to protect the central zone. Mahrez acts as a ball playing defender to help start attacks, while Kessié uses his aerial strength and Milliral provides cover. The wide defenders, Gonçalves and Galeno, function as wing backs who push high up the pitch to provide width, but they must track back quickly to form a five man line when the opposition has the ball.

The midfield operates with a double pivot to shield the defense. Atangana and Dams sit in front of the back three to intercept passes and tackle oncoming attackers. They hold their positions to ensure the center remains difficult to penetrate. Ahead of them, Demiral and Ibañez operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. These two players look to find pockets of space to receive the ball and drive forward into the final third.

In the attacking phase, Al-Ahli (KSA) relies on a lone striker, Mendy, to lead the line. Mendy works to hold up the ball and bring the midfielders into the play. The wing backs, Gonçalves and Galeno, provide the main width by making runs down the flanks to cross the ball into the box. The two attacking midfielders, Demiral and Ibañez, make runs from deep to support the striker, while the front line presses the opposition to force turnovers high up the pitch.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close together, the team makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the speed of transition through the wide areas, as Galeno and Gonçalves can quickly move from deep positions to join the attack. This allows the team to exploit space behind the opposition full backs.
