West Brom Football Formation
Starting Lineup
JOSH (GRIFFITHS) · DANNY (IMRAY) · KRYSTIAN (BIELIK) · GEORGE (CAMPBELL) · CHARLIE (TAYLOR) · OUSMANE (DIAKITÉ) · ALEX (MOWATT) · JED (WALLACE) · OLLIE (BOSTOCK) · JOSH (MAJA) · KARLAN (GRANT)West Brom utilize a 4-2-4 formation to play a very direct and vertical style of football. This lineup focuses on heavy pressure in the final third and rapid transitions to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to pin the opponent back and use the width of the pitch to create scoring chances through high volume attacking.
Josh acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a flat back four with Danny and Charlie acting as full backs. Danny is expected to push up to provide width while Charlie must track back to cover the flank. In the center, Krystian and George form the central pairing, with Krystian providing cover and George acting as a ball playing defender to start moves. This defensive unit stays relatively compact to prevent through balls when the team pushes high.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to manage the transition from defense to attack. Ousmane and Alex occupy the two central roles, where they must work hard to shield the back four. Alex focuses on breaking the lines with vertical passes, while Ousmane works to intercept play and recycle possession. Their main job is to win the ball and quickly find the four players positioned ahead of them to keep the pressure on.
In the attacking phase, West Brom deploy four forwards to overwhelm the defense. Jed and Ollie play as wide wingers, with Jed looking to cut inside and Ollie to deliver crosses into the box. Karlan and Josh lead the line as a strike duo, working together to hold up the ball and contest aerial duels. This front four is designed to press the opponent high up the pitch, forcing mistakes near the enemy goal.
This formation offers clear tactical advantages, such as the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs join the attack. By committing so many players forward, the team can isolate Jed and Ollie in one on one situations against the opposing full backs. The high number of attackers also allows the team to press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opponent to play out from the back.
The 4-2-4 formation is built for a high risk, high reward style of play. It is best suited for games where the team needs to chase a result or against opponents that struggle to handle intense pressing.
