Gent Football Formation
Starting Lineup
KJELL (PEERSMAN) · GILLES (DE MEYER) · MAKSIM (PASKOTSI) · MATTIES (VOLCKAERT) · ABDOUL (AYINDE) · MOHAMMED (EL ADFAOUI) · ATSUKI (ITO) · ABDELKAHAR (KADRI) · MOMODOU (SONKO) · WILFRIED (KANGA) · HYLLARION (GOORE)Gent uses a 4-2-4 formation to play a highly vertical brand of football. This lineup is built to catch opponents out on the break and pin them back with a heavy presence in the final third. The goal is to use direct play and quick transitions to overwhelm the opposition once the ball is won.
Kjell operates between the posts to organize the defense. The back line stays as a flat back four to maintain compactness when the team sits deep. Abdoul plays as a left back to cover the flank, while Gilles acts as the right back to support the defense. In the center, Matties and Maksim serve as the two central defenders, where they must hold their position and cover space if the midfield gets bypassed.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a screen for the back four. Atsuki and Mohammed work to shield the defense and break the line with vertical passes. Their main job is to intercept the ball and quickly switch play to the wide players. They connect the defense to the heavy attack by holding the ball under pressure and driving forward when space opens up in the middle.
The front line consists of four attackers designed to stretch the opposition. Abdelkahar acts as an inverted winger on the left, while Momodou operates on the right to provide width. In the center, Hyllarion and Wilfried act as two forwards to occupy the central defenders. This front four is expected to press high and force mistakes, using their movement to create space for runners from deep.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for Gent. The team can create wide overloads by having the wingers pull defenders out of position. There is also a high potential for speed of transition, as the two central midfielders can immediately find the four attackers. When the team wins the ball, the large number of players in the final third makes it difficult for the opposition to track every runner.
Gent relies on this 4-2-4 formation to dominate through directness and offensive numbers. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that play a high line and leave gaps behind their defenders.
