Starting Lineup

Sundowns play with a 5-3-2 formation that focuses on a strong defensive base and rapid vertical transitions. This lineup is built to stay compact when the ball is lost and then push hard forward once possession is regained. By using a back five, Sundowns aim to control the center of the pitch while leaving space for wing backs to exploit the flanks during the attacking phase.

Williams stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back five consists of Mokoena, Cupido, and Kekana acting as the central core, with Mudau and Lunga operating as the wide defenders. Mudau and Lunga are expected to push high up the pitch to provide width, while Mokoena acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. Cupido and Kekana provide aerial strength and cover the space behind the advancing wing backs. The whole unit works to sit deep when necessary to deny space between the lines.

The midfield operates as a three man unit in the center. Mkhulise acts as the central link, helping to shield the defense and intercept passes. Adams and Allende occupy the left and right central midfield roles to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. This trio can shift across the pitch to track runners and ensure the team maintains a compact block in the middle. They work to break the line with forward passes to the strikers.

In the attacking phase, Sundowns use two forwards to stretch the opponent. Zwane and Ntsabeleng lead the line, often working together to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Zwane often drops slightly deeper to create space, while Ntsabeleng looks to run into channels. The wing backs, Mudau and Lunga, provide the main width, allowing the two forwards to stay central and occupy the opposition center backs. This movement forces the opposition defenders to pull out of position.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as defensive compactness and the ability to create wide overloads. When Mudau and Lunga overlap, they create two on one situations against opposition full backs.
