FC Groningen operates with a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and play vertical football to catch opponents off guard. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition into attack to exploit gaps in the opposition defense.

LOVRO stays between the posts to anchor the defense. The back line operates as a flat back four where WOUTER and TYRIQUE act as overlapping full backs to provide width during the build up. In the center, ELVIS VAN and SVEN work together to cover space and intercept passes. SVEN and ELVIS VAN must stay compact to ensure they do not leave gaps behind them while the full backs push high.

The midfield utilizes a combination of three players to control the center of the pitch. TRAVIS and TIKA work to shield the defense and break the line with their passing. MATS sits in the attacking ten role to connect the midfield to the front three. MATS looks to find pockets of space to create chances, while TIKA and TRAVIS move to intercept the ball and drive the team forward from deep positions.

The attack consists of three players working in tandem. BRYNJÓLFUR plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press. On the flanks, MARK and RUI act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. This movement creates space for WOUTER and TYRIQUE to overlap, making the attack much harder to mark. The front three must press in unison to force mistakes from the opposition.

One major advantage for FC Groningen is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wingers and full backs. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which puts immense pressure on the opponent. The connection between MATS and the attackers allows for quick verticality, making the team very dangerous during transitions.

This 4-3-3 formation focuses on high intensity and direct attacking play. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit deep and struggle to handle pressure in their own half.
