Unión (SF) employs a 4-5-1 formation that focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions. This lineup is built to play a way that congests the middle of the pitch, making it difficult for opponents to pass through the center. The goal is to remain hard to beat while looking to strike quickly when the ball is won.
Matías Mansilla stands between the posts to command the area. Ahead of him, the back four maintains a relatively flat line to deny space behind. Maizon Rodríguez and Juan P. Ludueña act as the central defenders, with Rodríguez providing aerial strength and Ludueña covering the spaces. On the flanks, Lautaro Vargas and Mateo Del Blanco provide width, with Vargas expected to track back often and Del Blanco to overlap during attacks.
The midfield consists of five players working to control the central zones. Mauro Pittón and Rafael Profini act as a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. In front of them, Julián Palacios and Brahian Cuello operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. Nicolás Palavecino plays as the attacking midfielder, looking to find pockets of space and break the line with through balls to the forward.
The attacking side relies on a lone striker, Cristian Tarragona, who must work hard to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Because the team plays with a single forward, the attacking moves are often built through the wide areas or via quick vertical passes from Palavecino. Tarragona must press the opposition defenders to prevent them from building play easily from the back.
This formation offers significant advantages in terms of compactness when defending, as the five midfielders can drop deep to create two banks of four. It allows Unión (SF) to dominate the central zone and force opponents to the wings. The presence of Palavecino allows the team to transition rapidly from a low block into a counter attack by catching the opposition out of position.
This 4-5-1 formation is a defensive system designed to frustrate teams that rely on heavy possession. It is best suited for matches where the opponent has high technical quality in midfield and needs to be denied space.
