The lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams on the break. This formation allows the team to maintain a rigid defensive block while remaining ready to transition quickly into attack.
LAUTARO stays between the posts to command the penalty area. The back five uses a central trio of ZANIOLO, CALHANOGLU, and BARELLA to protect the middle. BARELLA and CALHANOGLU act as the primary ball playing defenders to start attacks from the back. GNONTO and DIABY provide the necessary width as wing backs, pushing high to overlap during transitions. This defensive unit works to stay close together to block passing lanes and intercept crosses.
The midfield operates in a flat four to control the central zones. BASTONI and LACROIX occupy the central roles to provide stability and cover space. BASTONI acts to link the defense to the middle while LACROIX works to break the line with forward runs. On the flanks, DIMARCO and PORRO provide width and support the wing backs. They must track back to help the defense and shift across the pitch to maintain the block.
Inter utilizes a lone striker, JOSEP, to lead the line. JOSEP stays high to hold up the ball and pin the opposition defenders back. The attack is built through long passes or quick direct play to the wings. DIMARCO and PORRO often cut inside to create extra presence in the box. This setup forces the opponent to spread out, creating space for the midfielders to run into.
One major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. The narrow lines make it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team also benefits from wide overloads when GNONTO and DIABY push forward alongside the midfielders. This creates many options for a quick switch play to find space on the flanks.
This formation provides a strong defensive foundation that is hard to break down. It is best suited for matches against heavy possession teams where Inter can defend deep and exploit spaces on the counter.
