Starting Lineup

Germany plays with a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to play a highly vertical and aggressive style of football. The intent is to commit many bodies forward to overwhelm the opponent in the final third through rapid transitions and constant pressure.

Neuer sits between the posts to manage the high line. Ginter and Rüdiger form a two man central defense that must step up to intercept long balls and cover the space behind the midfield. Rüdiger uses his physical strength to dominate attackers in the air and during one on one duels. Ginter acts as a ball playing defender to help start the build up from the back. This defensive unit relies on high aggression to stop threats before they reach the box.

The midfield operates with a central block of four players to control the center of the pitch. Kimmich acts as a deep pivot to shield the defense and switch play with his wide passing range. Raum works alongside him to press and disrupt the opponent in the middle. Goretzka and Pavlovic drive forward into the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. This group moves together to press in waves and prevent opponents from playing through the middle.

Germany uses four attackers to create constant chaos. Musiala and Havertz play as two central forwards, where Musiala uses his dribbling to break the line and Havertz provides a presence to hold up the ball. Wirtz operates from the left wing to cut inside and create chances, while Brandt stays wide on the right to provide crosses. The front four press heavily to force turnovers high up the pitch and create immediate goal scoring opportunities.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the attacking zones. By pushing four players high, Germany can create wide overloads and isolate defenders in one on one situations. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for the opponent to build out from the back. Another advantage is the speed of transition when Kimmich or Goretzka win the ball and immediately find the front four.
