Starting Lineup

Jashari · Saelemaekers · Pavlovic · De Winter · Giménez · Leão · Pulisic · Nkunku · Rabiot · Ricci · Maignan

Milan uses a 2-5-3 formation that relies on a high press and intense verticality. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opponent in the middle of the pitch and quickly transition into the final third. The goal is to control as much territory as possible by pushing players high up the pitch to force mistakes.

Maignan acts as the last line of defense, often playing a high line to sweep up long balls. The back line consists of only two central defenders, De Winter and Pavlovic, who must stay compact to prevent through balls. Because there are no wide defenders, these two must be ready to step up and intercept passes while covering huge amounts of space. The defensive unit functions as a high block, requiring constant communication to keep the distance between the defenders and the midfield small.

The midfield is a dense five man unit designed to dominate the center. Jashari and Saelemaekers act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and break up play. Rabiot and Ricci operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack, with Rabiot using his physical presence to drive forward. Pulisic plays as an attacking ten, sitting behind the forwards to create chances and break the line with his passing. This midfield group works to win the ball back immediately after losing it.

Milan employs three attackers to pin the opponent back. Giménez leads the line as a lone striker, looking to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Nkunku operates as an inverted winger on the right, looking to cut inside and shoot, while Leão plays on the left to use his dribbling and pace on the flank. These three forwards press in coordinated waves to prevent the opposition from building play from the back.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the midfield to control the tempo of the game. It also creates wide overloads when the midfielders shift wide to support the attackers. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to find time on the ball.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for aggressive teams that want to dominate possession and territory. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play through a heavy central press.
