Ortega sits in goal to manage the defensive line. Milenkovic and Morato form the central defensive pair in a flat back four. Milenkovic uses his aerial strength to defend crosses and clear danger from the box. Aina acts as a right back who can push forward to join the attack, while Williams holds the left side. The defenders must step up to squeeze the play or drop to cover the space left by the advancing wide players.

The midfield is a double pivot consisting of Dominguez and Anderson. They are responsible for shielding the two central defenders and breaking up play. Dominguez works to link the defense to the attack by finding passes to the forwards. Anderson has the job to track back and intercept passes to prevent counter attacks.
