Fulham utilizes a 4-2-4 formation to drive a high press and vertical style of play. This lineup is built to attack with extreme aggression and push the ball into the final third as quickly as possible. The goal is to use numbers in the attacking zone to force mistakes from the opponent.
Leno starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back four consists of Castagne and Robinson as the wide defenders, both of whom will overlap to add width. In the center, Andersen and Bassey form the defensive pairing. Andersen uses his aerial strength and passing range to distribute the ball, while Bassey focuses on his ability to cover space. They must step up together to maintain a high defensive line.
The midfield is a double pivot featuring Reed and Lukic. Their main job is to shield the defense and provide a link between the back line and the forwards. Lukic works to hold the central area and connect the play, while Reed looks to break the line with forward runs and passes. They must remain disciplined to intercept passes and prevent counter attacks when the team is committed forward.
The attack is composed of four players who stretch the field. Chukwueze and Wilson operate on the wings, with Chukwueze looking to cut inside and Wilson ready to cross the ball into the box. Smith Rowe and Jimenez act as the central duo. Jimenez works to hold up the ball for others, while Smith Rowe makes runs into the gaps to create scoring opportunities. The front line is expected to press the opposition defenders constantly to disrupt their build up.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back in dangerous areas. Fulham can also create wide overloads when the full backs push high into the attacking third. This also creates chances to isolate wide players in one on one situations against the opposition defenders.
This 4-2-4 formation is a heavy attacking lineup built for high pressure and vertical play. It is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm an opponent who prefers to sit deep.
