Panathinaikos Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Lafon · Palmer-brown · Ingason · Calabria · Kyriakopoulos · Chirivella · Kountouris · Antino · Taborda · Tetteh · BakasetasPanathinaikos uses a 4-2-4 formation that leans heavily into a high press and verticality. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents in the final third by pushing many bodies forward. The team seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and break the lines quickly to catch the opposition defense out of position.
Lafon acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a flat four with Calabria on the right and Kyriakopoulos on the left. Calabria is expected to overlap to provide width while Kyriakopoulos pushes up to support the wingers. In the center, Palmer-brown and Ingason form the defensive duo, tasked with covering the space behind the full backs and winning aerial duels. This unit must remain compact to prevent long balls from bypassing the midfield.
The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Chirivella and Kountouris. Chirivella acts as the primary shield for the defense, looking to intercept passes and break up play. Kountouris connects the defense to the attack, driving forward to support the transition. Because there are only two players in this central area, they must work hard to track back and cover the gaps left by the advancing full backs.
The attacking unit is extremely aggressive with four players stationed high up the pitch. Bakasetas and Tetteh act as the two central forwards, working to hold up the ball and pin back the opposition center backs. Antino and Taborda operate as wide wingers on the left and right flanks respectively. These players are expected to cut inside to create central threats or stay wide to stretch the defense, while also pressing the opposing full backs immediately upon losing possession.
One major advantage for Panathinaikos is the ability to create massive wide overloads when Calabria and Kyriakopoulos push forward to join the wingers. The formation also allows for a high press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build play from the back. By placing four attackers high, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations, forcing defenders into difficult decisions.
This 4-2-4 formation prioritizes offensive pressure and direct attacking play. It is best suited for matches where Panathinaikos needs to break down a low block or exploit a high defensive line through sheer numbers in the box.
