Starting Lineup

Atlético uses a 4-2-4 formation to play a high press and vertical game meant to catch opponents off guard. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with immediate speed. The team wants to stay high and force mistakes from the opponent through constant pressure.

The defensive unit features Goalkeeper as the final man. A back four uses Llorente at right back and Rugeri at left back. Llorente will often overlap to provide width in the attacking phase. Hancko and Pubil act as the central defenders. Hancko provides cover while Pubil stays central to hold the line. They must be ready to step up to catch attackers offside or drop back to cover the space if the midfield is bypassed.

The midfield relies on a double pivot with Barrios and Ederson. Ederson uses his passing range to break the line and find the attackers. Barrios works to shield the defense and intercept central passes. This pair must hold their position when the ball is lost to prevent being countered. They serve as the vital link that moves the ball from the back four to the front four.

The attack consists of four players positioned high to pressure the defense. Greenwood and Nusa play as wide wingers to stretch the pitch. Greenwood can cut inside to threaten the goal directly. Lookman and Alvarez operate as the central duo. Alvarez uses his pressing intensity and constant movement to harass center backs. Lookman looks for pockets of space to receive the ball and create chances. They press in coordinated waves to keep the opposition pinned back.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads when the full backs push forward. The speed of transition is a major strength. When Barrios or Ederson win the ball, they can quickly find the four attackers to exploit space. The ability to press high in waves also makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back comfortably.
