Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · Gallego · Tirapu · Urtubi · De Andrés · Dani © · Argote · SolaAthletic play a 5-3-2 formation that focuses on a strong defensive foundation and quick verticality. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and use the width of the pitch to transition from defense to attack. The team aims to sit deep when out of possession and use the strength of the central block to force turnovers before hitting the opponent on the break.
Zubizarreta acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit consists of a back three formed by De Andrés, Goikoetxea, and Liceranzu. De Andrés acts as the central anchor while Goikoetxea and Liceranzu provide cover and aerial strength. On the flanks, Urkiaga and Gallego operate as wing backs who provide the team with width. They are expected to push up the pitch to support the attack but must track back quickly to maintain the five man line when the opposition has the ball.
The midfield works in a three man block to control the center of the pitch. Urtubi and Tirapu sit in the middle to shield the defense and intercept passes. They provide the connection between the back line and the forward players. Sola plays as an attacking midfielder to drive the ball forward and create chances. This midfield unit works to close down spaces and press the opposition in the central zones to prevent them from playing through the middle.
Athletic use two forwards to lead the attack. Argote and the captain Dani operate as a strike duo. Dani is tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play while Argote looks to make runs behind the defense. The wing backs, Gallego and Urkiaga, provide much of the width, allowing the two forwards to stay central and occupy the opposition central defenders. This movement creates space for Sola to operate in the pockets between the lines.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages such as defensive compactness that makes it hard for opponents to play through the center. By using wing backs, the team can create wide overloads to pull the opposition defense apart. The presence of three central defenders allows the team to remain solid against long balls and cross deliveries. The team also benefits from a high speed of transition when they win the ball back in the middle third.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a solid platform for a team that wants to remain hard to beat while threatening on the counter. It is a lineup best suited for facing dominant teams that push many players forward and leave space behind their defense.
