Starting Lineup

Atlético employs a 5-3-2 formation. The tactical identity of Atlético is built to be defensively solid and highly vertical. This lineup focuses on staying compact in a low block before launching quick attacks to catch the opposition off guard.

Oblak acts as the last line of defense, utilizing his elite shot stopping and positioning to keep the team in the game. The back line consists of three central defenders, with Rodri acting as the primary cover in the center while Miranda and Pubil guard the zones around him. Llorente and Felipe operate as wing backs to provide the necessary width. While Llorente will often overlap to push the play forward, Felipe must track back to support the central trio. The whole unit works to sit deep and block passing lanes to prevent through balls from getting through.

The midfield works to shield the defense and link the lines. Barrios and Saul sit in the middle to protect the back three, with Saul using his energy to drive forward and Barrios focusing on the intercept and hold roles. Griezman plays as the attacking ten, acting as the main creator who connects the midfield to the front two. He will look to find pockets of space to receive the ball and break the line with a pass.

The attacking unit uses two forwards to occupy the opposition central defenders. Falcao and Alvarez lead the line, with Falcao relying on his clinical finishing and movement to create chances. They press the defenders high to win the ball back quickly. Griezman supports them by dropping deep, which allows the wing backs to provide width through crosses. This movement creates space for the strikers to run into or cut inside.

This formation provides significant numerical superiority when defending deep in the box. Five defenders and three midfielders make it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The team also gains a tactical edge through the speed of transition when Griezman or Saul recovers possession. Using the wing backs to create wide overloads helps to stretch the opposing defense and switch play effectively.
