Brentford Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Janelt · Kayode · Collins · Berge · van den Berg · I. Thiago · Ouattara · Damsgaard · Yarmolyuk · Jensen · KelleherBrentford uses a 5-2-3 formation that focuses on a solid defensive block and quick vertical transitions. This lineup is built to absorb pressure in the middle of the pitch and strike rapidly once the ball is won. The team aims to remain compact while playing direct football to exploit spaces behind the opposition defense.
Kelleher acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit functions as a back five with van den Berg sitting centrally to anchor the line. Collins and Berge act as the two wide center backs, where Berge provides coverage and Collins uses his aerial strength. On the flanks, Kayode and Janelt play as wing backs, tasked with pushing high to provide width and tracking back to defend the wide areas. This defensive unit works to stay tight and push up together to maintain a high line when needed.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Yarmolyuk and Jensen working to control the center. Jensen acts as the primary link to connect the defense to the attack, while Yarmolyuk helps shield the back five and intercepts passes. These two midfielders must cover a lot of ground to break the line with passes and ensure they do not get bypassed by central runners. They stay close to one another to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle.
Brentford utilizes three attackers to pressure the opposition. I. Thiago plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. Damsgaard and Ouattara operate as wide attackers, with Damsgaard looking to cut inside to create chances and Ouattara using his speed to stretch the play. This attacking trio is designed to stay high and ready to run into space as soon as the midfield wins possession.
This formation offers the advantage of compactness when defending in a low block. By using five defenders and two midfielders, the team makes it hard for opponents to find gaps between the lines. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Kayode or Janelt overlap their respective wingers. The team can also shift quickly from a defensive stance to a vertical attacking movement.
The 5-2-3 is a resilient formation designed for teams that want to defend deep and hit on the break. It is best suited for facing dominant teams that hold high defensive lines.
