Costa Rica National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Lonnis © · Wright · Gómez · López · Wanchope · Solís · Centeno · Martínez · Marín · Wallace · CastroCosta Rica utilizes a 5-2-3 formation that focuses on a direct and vertical style of play. This lineup is built to absorb pressure through a dense defensive block before looking to break the lines quickly with wide players. The goal is to maintain a compact presence that makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle.
Lonnis (C) acts as the last line of defense, commanding his area from the goal line. The back five consists of Wright, Martínez, and Marín, who work to stay close together to prevent gaps. Martínez and Marín provide cover on the flanks of the central trio, while Wright holds the center. Wallace and Castro operate as wing backs, tasked with pushing high to provide width or dropping deep to form a flat back five when the team sits deep.
The midfield operates as a double pivot with Solís and Centeno controlling the central zone. These two must work hard to shield the defense and intercept passes before they reach the final third. Solís and Centeno connect the back line to the attackers by receiving the ball from the defenders and quickly switching play to the wings. They need to cover large spaces to prevent the opposition from dominating the middle of the pitch.
Up front, Costa Rica employs three attackers to stretch the opposition. Wanchope leads the line as a lone striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and wait for support. Gómez and López act as wide wingers, positioned to cut inside or run in behind the full backs. This attacking trio is expected to press the opponent's defenders high to force errors and create chances through quick transitions.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Wallace and Castro overlap their respective wingers. This forces the opposition defense to shift constantly and opens space in the center. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can sit deep to block passing lanes and force the opponent to cross from distance.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on defensive discipline and rapid counter attacking transitions. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, allowing Costa Rica to exploit spaces behind the defense.
