Chelsea uses a 2-5-3 formation that focuses on extreme verticality and a high press. This lineup is built to dominate the central areas of the pitch and overwhelm opponents through direct passing and rapid transitions. The goal is to control the ball in the middle third and quickly push numbers forward to catch the opposition out of position.

Mike Penders stays between the posts to act as the first point of distribution. The defensive unit relies on a back two consisting of Van Hecke and Levi Colwill. These central defenders must play a high line to keep the team compact. Van Hecke provides aerial strength while Levi Colwill uses his passing range to break the line from deep. Because there are only two central defenders, the wide players must drop back to cover the flanks and prevent crosses.

The midfield works as a five man unit to dominate possession. Reece James and Marc Cucurella occupy the defensive midfield roles to shield the back two and intercept passes. In the center, Moisés Caicedo provides intense pressing and covers ground to break up play, while Enzo Fernández uses his long passing range to switch play and connect the defense to the attack. Cole Palmer operates as the attacking ten, finding pockets of space to create chances for the front three.

Chelsea utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. João Pedro acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and occupy the center backs. On the wings, Pedro Neto and Anthony Gordon provide width and pace. Pedro Neto looks to cut inside to threaten the goal, while Anthony Gordon uses his running to pull defenders away. These three forwards press high to force turnovers in the final third.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the midfield to control the tempo of the game. By using five players in the middle, Chelsea can easily bypass a standard three man midfield. Another advantage is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the wingers receive the ball in advanced positions. The high press from the front three also creates constant pressure on the opponent.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for aggressive, ball dominant football. It is best suited for games where Chelsea can control the central zone and exploit space behind a high defensive line.
