Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Garnacho (Sterling) · Jorgensen (Sanchez) · Delap (Aubameyang) · Lavia (Oguchukwu) · Zakaria (Dewsbury Hall) · Koulibaly (Tosin) · Mudryk (Gittens) · Disasi (Chalobah) · Badiashile (Sarr) · Felix (Nkunku) · WileyChelsea operates with a 5-4-1 formation designed to be defensively solid. This lineup focuses on sitting deep and waiting to catch the opposition on the break. The goal is to deny space in the central areas and force the opponent wide. It is a formation built to play a counter attacking style of football.
Delap stands between the posts to command the penalty area. The defensive unit uses a back three consisting of Felix, Zakaria, and Lavia. These three center backs must stay compact to block any runs through the middle. Garnacho plays as the left wing back and is tasked to push up the flank and provide width. On the opposite side, Mudryk works as the right wing back to cover the entire wing. This defensive unit relies on the trio to cover central runs while the wing backs track back to help.
The midfield operates in a flat four to provide a screen in front of the defense. Koulibaly and Badiashile act as the central pairing to shield the back three and intercept passes. They need to hold their positions and break the line when the ball moves forward. Disasi occupies the right side of the midfield and must track back to help the defense. Wiley plays on the left side to help link the play. This midfield block connects the defensive line to the lone striker.
Jorgensen leads the line as a lone striker. Because the team sits deep, the attacking work relies on Jorgensen to hold up the ball and wait for support. Width comes from Garnacho and Mudryk when they overlap into the final third. The forwards must press high when the ball is lost to prevent immediate counters. Quick passes are used to find the attackers in space once the ball is won.
One major strength of this Chelsea formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. With five defenders and four midfielders, it is very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The team also benefits from the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads. When Garnacho and Mudryk push up, they force the opposing wingers to track back. This allows for quick transitions to exploit the flanks.
This 5-4-1 formation is built to protect a lead and frustrate attacking teams. It works best against opponents who play with high lines and leave space behind their defenders.
