Starting Lineup

Onana · Yoro · Federicson · Shaw · Malacia · Ugarte · Forson · Mount · Sancho · Hojlund · Amad

Man Utd utilizes a 5-2-3 formation that leans heavily on a high press and quick vertical transitions. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike rapidly before the opposition can settle. It aims to control much of the game through aggressive pressing and using width to stretch opposing back lines.

Onana acts as the last line of defense, acting as a sweeper keeper to cover space behind the back line. The defensive unit consists of three central defenders including Ugarte, Yoro, and Federicson. Ugarte provides a physical presence to intercept passes, while Yoro and Federicson look to step up and cover gaps. The wing backs, Shaw and Malacia, provide the necessary width by pushing high to overlap. This five man unit can drop deep to form a low block or push up to compress the playing area.

The midfield operates as a double pivot with Forson and Mount occupying the central spaces. Forson works to drive forward and carry the ball into the final third, while Mount helps to connect the defense to the attack. These two players must work hard to track back and protect the central zone when the team loses possession. They act as the engine, breaking the lines with passes to the front three.

In the attacking third, the team uses three forwards consisting of Sancho, Amad, and Hojlund. Sancho and Amad act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances, while Hojlund operates as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the opposition defenders. This front line is expected to press in coordinated waves to force mistakes. The movement of the wingers creates space for the wing backs to make runs into the box.

A primary advantage for Man Utd is the ability to create wide overloads when Shaw and Malacia push forward alongside the wingers. The formation also allows for high pressing in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build from the back. Additionally, the three central defenders provide great compactness when defending against direct teams.

This formation focuses on aggressive pressing and rapid transition play to catch opponents off guard. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team wants to dominate the pitch through high intensity and verticality.
