Valencia Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Junior (82) (Kochen (74)) · Van de Ven (86) (Torres (80)) · Araujo (85) (Moreno (77)) · Natan (82) (Catena (72)) · Guerra (80) (Pepelu (78)) · Marin (84) (Olusesi (71)) · Alvarez (81) (Mella (79)/Fernandez (75)) · Abde (84) · Lo Celso (85) (Chuki (80)) · Arribas (89) · Vlahovic (84) (Liso (79))Valencia uses a 2-4-4 formation that focuses on a high press and rapid verticality. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the final third by committing many bodies forward. The team wants to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately attack the space behind the opponent defense.
Vlahovic acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of only two central defenders, Lo Celso and Arribas, who must play a high line to keep the team compact. Lo Celso and Arribas need to be extremely fast to cover the large amount of space left behind them. Because there are no full backs, these two central defenders must be dominant in the air and capable of intercepting long balls sent into the channels.
The midfield block consists of four players working to control the center of the pitch. Alvarez plays as the single pivot to shield the two defenders and intercept passes. Abde, Marin, and Guerra operate ahead of him to dominate the middle area. Abde and Marin help to connect the defense to the attack by finding passing lanes, while Guerra pushes into the half spaces to support the front line. This midfield group works to win the ball back quickly to restart the attack.
The attacking unit is heavy with four players positioned to pin the opposition back. Natan and Van de Ven play as wide wingers to provide width and stretch the defense. Araujo and Junior act as two central forwards to occupy the central defenders. Natan and Van de Ven look to cut inside or deliver crosses, while Araujo and Junior work to hold up the ball and make runs into the box. This front four applies constant pressure to force mistakes from the opposition.
Valencia finds tactical advantages through massive numbers in the attacking zones. The 2-4-4 formation creates constant pressure and allows for high pressing in coordinated waves. By using four attackers, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations. If the opposition tries to defend deep, the midfield group of Abde, Marin, and Guerra can push up to create numerical superiority in the central areas.
This formation relies on extreme bravery and speed to compensate for the lack of traditional full backs. It is best suited for matches where Valencia needs to break down a low block or play against an opponent that struggles with high intensity pressing.
