The midfield consists of a double pivot designed to control the center. Kessié shields the back four with his physical presence and ability to intercept passes. Tonali connects the lines by driving forward and using his passing range to break the line of the opposition press. These two players work to regain possession and immediately look to switch play to the attackers. They provide the necessary grit to allow the front four to stay high.
