Hamburg utilizes a 3-4-3 formation that centers on a high press and rapid vertical transitions. This formation aims to control the pitch through aggressive positioning and quick ball movement. By using three central defenders and two wide midfielders, Hamburg seeks to overwhelm opponents in both halves of the field.

Fernandes operates as the lone goalkeeper behind a back three. Pirola leads the central defense, providing stability while the other defenders step up to intercept passes. Capaldo plays as the right center back and covers the space behind the wide midfielder, while Omari stays on the left to act as the left center back. The unit functions by shifting together to maintain compactness, with the central defenders ready to track runners or block crosses when the team sits deep.

The midfield relies on a central pair to control the tempo and connect the defense to the front line. Lokonga and Remberg form the central engine room, where Lokonga works to shield the back three and intercept play. These two players must press hard to stop counter attacks before they reach the defensive line. Muheim and Mikelbrencis provide the width, acting as wide midfielders who push up to support the attack but must track back to help the defenders when possession is lost.

In the attacking third, the team uses three forwards to stretch the opposition. Glatzel acts as the lone striker, using his physical presence to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Königsdörffer operates from the left wing, while Vieira occupies the right flank. These attackers use their movement to cut inside and create space for the wide midfielders to overlap. The front three lead the press, forcing defenders into mistakes through constant running and pressure.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Muheim or Mikelbrencis push forward, they create two on one situations against the opposition full backs. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can move from a defensive block to a full attack in seconds. The positioning of Glatzel allows the team to break the line quickly with direct passes to the striker.
