Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
CARRARA (Kukulis) · PINOTTI (Vukoje) · KONTEH (Franchi) · EL MAHBOUBI (Matarrese) · BALLO (Della Mora) · CERPELLETTI (Pannuto, Putsen) · VENTURINI (La Torre) · SORINO (Rocca) · JAKIROVIC (Mackiewicz) · BOVIO (Nenna) · FARRONATO (Pentima)Inter play with a 5-4-1 formation that is built to be defensively solid. This formation focuses on a low block and a heavy emphasis on protecting the central areas. The team looks to sit deep and wait for the opponent to commit numbers forward before launching quick vertical attacks.
Carrara acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of three central defenders with Venturini, Cerpelletti, and Pinotti. Venturini and Cerpelletti hold the line while Pinotti covers the middle. The wide defenders, El Mahboubi as the right wing back and Konteh as the left wing back, are responsible for tracking back to defend the flanks but can also push up to provide width. This unit works together to block passing lanes and keep the team compact.
The midfield works in a flat line of four to shield the defense. Jakirovic and Bovio sit in the center to intercept passes and break up play. Jakirovic and Bovio act as the engine to connect the defense to the rest of the team. On the flanks, Sorino and Ballo operate as wide midfielders who can shift to help the wing backs. These players must track back frequently to maintain the defensive lineup and help the back five.
Inter utilizes a lone striker in Farronato to lead the line. Farronato must hold up the ball to allow the midfield and wing backs to move forward. The attack is built through quick transitions where the wide players, Sorino and Ballo, push up to support the lone forward. The forwards press the opponent high up the pitch to force mistakes, but the main goal is to create space for long balls or quick counters.
One tactical advantage is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and four midfielders create a very hard block to break through. The team also creates wide overloads when El Mahboubi and Konteh overlap with Sorino and Ballo during a transition. This makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.
This 5-4-1 formation provides a very disciplined defensive identity. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams where Inter needs to sit deep and hit on the break.
