This formation is built to dominate the ball and push the opposition back into their own half. The formation relies on keeping the ball in tight spaces while using vertical passes to break lines quickly.
R Williams operates between the posts to start the build up from the back. A flat back four consists of K Mudau and K Ndamane on the flanks with G Kekana and T Mokoena in the center. K Mudau acts as an overlapping full back to provide width while K Ndamane stays more compact to cover the space behind the midfield. T Mokoena and G Kekana must remain disciplined to stop central runs, with T Mokoena often stepping up to intercept passes. The whole defensive unit moves together to maintain a high line.
The midfield formation relies on a three man unit to control the center of the pitch. N Santos holds the position as a single pivot to shield the defense and break the play. To his sides, M Allende and T Matthews occupy the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. M Allende uses his passing range to switch play, while T Matthews can drive forward to support the front three. This trio works to win the ball back immediately after a loss to maintain pressure.
Sundowns attacks with three forwards who stay high to stretch the opposition. B Leon acts as a lone striker who holds up the ball to bring others into play. A Sales and L Mothiba play as wide wingers, with both players looking to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. The width comes from the movement of the wingers and the runs made by the full backs. When the team loses the ball, these three forwards lead the press to force mistakes high up the pitch.
One advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it hard for opponents to build from the back. The team also gains numerical superiority in midfield when M Allende and T Matthews push up, leaving N Santos to cover the middle. Another strength is the way the wingers and full backs create wide overloads to find space for crosses. This formation makes it difficult for teams to defend both the center and the flanks at the same time.
This 4-3-3 system is designed to control the tempo through ball retention and high intensity pressing. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit deep and struggle to handle constant pressure.
