This formation is built to control the rhythm of the game by keeping the ball in the opponent's half and hunting in packs to win it back quickly. The goal is to use short passes to move the opposition around and create openings through constant movement.
R Williams starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four where K Mudau and K Ndamane act as full backs to provide width. K Mudau pushes up to overlap while K Ndamane stays wide to stretch the play. In the center, T Mokoena and G Kekana act as the primary defenders, with T Mokoena using his ability to read the game and cover space. They step up to catch attackers offside and keep the defensive line high.
The midfield operates with three central players to dominate the center of the pitch. N Santos sits in the middle to shield the defense and break up play. Around him, M Allende and T Matthews work to connect the defense to the attack. M Allende uses his wide passing range to switch play, while T Matthews drives forward to link the lines. This trio works to keep the ball moving and ensures the team maintains control during build up.
Sundowns use three attackers to pin the opposition back. P Shalulile and I Rayners act as wide attackers, with P Shalulile often cutting inside to threaten the goal. B Leon operates as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The forwards press high to force turnovers in dangerous areas, using the width provided by the wingers to create space in the middle for the midfielders to run into.
One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. When the ball is lost, the front three and the midfield trio close down the space immediately. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the middle, where the three midfielders can outnumber many opposition formations. This allows the team to sustain pressure and isolate wide players in one on one situations when the wingers receive the ball.
This formation creates a relentless attacking presence through high positioning and constant ball retention. It is best suited for games where the team wants to dominate the ball and suffocate an opponent who prefers to sit deep.
