Milan utilizes a 4-2-4 formation to play a highly vertical style of football. This formation aims to stretch the pitch and overwhelm the opposition with direct attacking movements. The goal for Milan is to use the width provided by the forwards to create spaces in the middle for the midfielders to exploit.

Maignan operates between the posts to start the build up with his passing range. Behind him, a back four consists of Theo and Calabria on the flanks with Tomori and Kalulu in the center. Theo often pushes up the pitch to overlap, while Calabria provides defensive cover. Tomori uses his speed to cover the space behind the line, and Kalulu provides aerial strength in the box. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent being caught on the break.

The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Kessié and Tonali. Kessié acts as the shield for the defense, using his physical presence to intercept passes and break up play. Tonali drives forward from deep to connect the defense to the attack, often looking to break the line with a pass. These two players must cover a lot of ground to ensure the gap between the midfield and the back four remains small.

Up front, the team employs two central forwards in Brahim and Giroud. Giroud plays as a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into play, while Brahim moves around the striker to find pockets of space. Saelemaekers and Leão provide the width from the wings. Leão uses his dribbling style to cut inside from the left, which forces the opposing full back to stay deep and creates room for Theo to run into.

One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers and full backs move together. The two central forwards also force the opposition central defenders into one on one situations. This lineup also allows for a high press, where the four attackers push up to force turnovers high up the pitch.

This 4-2-4 formation is built for heavy attacking pressure and quick transitions. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block by using superior numbers in the final third.
