Starting Lineup

Zentner · Posch · Caci · da Costa · Kohr · Mwene · Amiri · K. Sano · Nebel · Jae-sung Lee · Tietz

Mainz utilizes a 3-5-2 formation to play a direct and high pressing style of football. This formation aims to dominate the central areas of the pitch and quickly move the ball into the final third. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and use vertical passing to catch opponents off guard.

Zentner acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a central trio with Posch holding the middle while Kohr and da Costa cover the left and right sides of the three man unit. Posch provides aerial strength and leadership in the center, while Kohr and da Costa step up to intercept passes or cover wide areas when the midfield pushes forward. The three defenders stay compact to block passing lanes and protect the space behind the midfield.

The midfield works in a central block with K. Sano acting as the single pivot to shield the defense. To his sides, Amiri and Nebel operate as the central engines to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Amiri uses his passing range to switch play, while Nebel helps to press and win back possession. This midfield formation provides a strong presence in the center of the park to break the lines of the opposition.

Mainz employs two forwards in a front two to lead the press. Tietz acts as a target man to hold up the ball, creating space for Jae-sung Lee to run into channels and make attacking movements. The wide midfielders, Mwene and Caci, push high to provide width and stretch the opposition. Mwene and Caci can overlap or cut inside to create numerical advantages in the attacking third, forcing defenders to shift and leave gaps.

One major strength of this system is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Mwene and Caci. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the front two and the wide players squeezing the opposition in their own half. The central density provided by K. Sano, Amiri, and Nebel makes it difficult for teams to play through the middle.

This 3-5-2 lineup defines Mainz as a team that is hard to break down while remaining dangerous on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a back four and can be exploited through central density and wide runs.
