This lineup is built to control the pitch by using wide areas to stretch the opposition while keeping a compact core in the middle. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and push forward quickly to catch the defense out of position.
R Williams starts in goal to anchor the defensive unit. The back line consists of a central trio where T Mokoena acts as the main presence in the middle, supported by K Johannes on the left and G Kekana on the right. A Modiba and Z Mdunyelwa operate as wing backs who provide width and push high up the flanks. When the team loses the ball, these wing backs drop back to form a five man defensive block. The central defenders cover space and mark runners to ensure the team remains hard to break down.
The midfield formation uses a three man line to control the center of the pitch. M Allende operates as the left central midfielder to connect the defense to the attack with his passing range. K Letlhaku and N Santos occupy the other central roles to shield the back three and break up opposition play. This group works to intercept passes and win second balls to keep the pressure on the opponent. They act as the engine room that allows the wing backs to move forward without leaving the center exposed.
Sundowns use two forwards to lead the line in a two man attack. B Leon and A Sales work together to pressure the opposition defenders and force mistakes. The two strikers often move into channels to create space for the midfielders to run into. One striker will often hold up the ball to allow the wing backs to overlap and provide crosses from the wide areas. This movement creates constant tension in the box and forces the opposing back line to stay deep.
One major advantage of this system is the ability to create wide overloads. When Z Mdunyelwa or A Modiba push forward, they create situations where the opposition wingers must track back or leave space behind. The team also gains numerical superiority in the middle during defensive phases by dropping into a very compact lineup. This makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center, forcing them to play wide where the wing backs can engage them.
This 5-3-2 system relies on heavy pressing and quick vertical movements to dominate games. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that play with wide formations and rely on wing play.
