Atlético play a traditional 4-4-2 formation that relies on defensive solidity and quick transitions. This lineup is built to sit in a mid block and wait for the right moment to strike. The team looks to stay compact to deny space between the lines, making them very difficult to break down in central areas.

J. Oblak acts as the last line of defense in goal, providing reliable shot stopping and commanding his area. The back four features P. Porro at right back and M. Ruggeri at left back, both of whom are expected to push up and overlap to provide width. In the center, C. Romero and D. Hancko form the defensive duo, with Romero providing aerial strength and Hancko working to cover space when the line steps up. This defensive unit works together to keep the lines close and prevent through balls.

The midfield operates with a double pivot to protect the center of the pitch. P. Barrios and M. Llorente sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and intercept passes. Llorente uses his engine to cover ground and drive forward, while Barrios holds his position to break up play. Ahead of them, Á. Baena and D. Ceballos (C) occupy the wide attacking roles. Ceballos (C) acts as a creator who can cut inside, while Baena looks to find pockets of space to play killer passes into the final third.

The attacking unit uses two forwards to stretch the opposition. A. Lookman plays as a left striker, using his speed and dribbling to run into channels. Samu operates as the right striker, tasked to hold up the ball and use his physical presence to bring others into play. These two forwards lead the press from the front, forcing defenders into mistakes and creating space behind the opposition defense through clever runs.

One major strength for Atlético is their ability to create wide overloads when P. Porro and M. Ruggeri push forward. This forces the opposition wingers to track back and leaves them outnumbered. Another advantage is the compactness of the formation, which allows the team to shift as a single unit to block passing lanes. This makes it very hard for opponents to find gaps when they try to play through the middle.

This 4-4-2 formation provides a balance of defensive discipline and direct attacking threat. It is best suited for games against possession heavy teams where sitting deep and hitting on the break is the most effective way to win.
