PSG Football Formation
Starting Lineup
EARPS (83) · CARMONA (84) · DE ALMEIDA (81) · SAMOURA (77) · KOIVISTO (80) · QUINN (79) · KARCHAOUI (87) · ROORD (86) · REITEN (86) · AJIBADE (82) · LEUCHTER (80)PSG employs a 5-2-3 formation that relies on a heavy high press and quick transitions. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the field to stretch opposing defenses. The goal is to use vertical passing to catch teams before they can settle into a defensive position.
EARPS operates as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a back three made up of SAMOURA, QUINN, and DE ALMEIDA. SAMOURA and QUINN provide aerial strength and cover the central zones, while DE ALMEIDA acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. The wide defenders, KOIVISTO as the right wing back and CARMONA as the left wing back, provide the necessary width. They push high to overlap the attackers and provide crosses, while they must track back quickly to help the back three when possession is lost.
The midfield uses a double pivot consisting of KARCHAOUI and ROORD. These two players must work hard to shield the defense and break the lines with their passing. KARCHAOUI and ROORD act as the connection between the deep defenders and the front three. They need to intercept passes in the middle third and immediately look to find the attackers to keep the pressure on.
The attacking unit uses three forwards with LEUCHTER acting as a lone striker. REITEN and AJIBADE play as wide wingers on the left and right sides. REITEN and AJIBADE often cut inside to create space for the wing backs to overlap. LEUCHTER works to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front, making runs to pull defenders out of position. This front line is designed to move in unison to squeeze the opponent into their own half.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for PSG. The wing backs provide wide overloads that can overwhelm a standard back four. The three central defenders allow the team to stay compact when defending in a low block. Additionally, the high positioning of the three attackers allows for a coordinated wave of pressing to force turnovers in dangerous areas.
The 5-2-3 formation provides a solid base for a team that wants to control the game through high intensity. This lineup is best suited for facing opponents that play with a high defensive line or those that struggle to handle wide pressure.
